Russia has partially withdrawn troops from the Ukrainian borders but some of them stay. Ukraine is ready for unpleasant surprises. President of Ukraine made such a statement in an interview to Financial Times as the President’s Office reported.
Recently Russia accumulated near the eastern borders of Ukraine and in occupied Crimea, the groupings numbering about 110,000 military men and raised concerns of the Ukrainian authorities and western partners.
Zelensky stated that the partial withdrawal of the Russian troops from the Ukrainian borders is a “small victory” of Kyiv and its allies. According to him, it was “the step from emotions to the pragmatic solution of the situation in Donbas”.
“There is a persistent threat because we are having a war, especially in the Donbas area, and the Russian army, we all know it, is a very powerful force. So we have it continuously at our borders. And this particular case is a case of psychological pressure. We are ready here for some unpleasant surprises. We’ll try to avoid them. Our military is very strong and we are prepared to deter any kind of threat of aggression,” the president said.
Considering the fact that the agreements on the comprehensive ceasefire in Donbas reached in July 2020 were violated at the beginning of 2021, while talks in the Normandy Format do not bring a desirable result, Ukraine’s President offered to change the diplomatic approach and enhance the role of the U.S. in the peace process.
As we reported, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky believes that the meeting with the President of Russia will take place after all. He ordered the President’s Office to organize the meeting with Vladimir Putin. The aim of the meeting is to agree on the de-escalation of the Donbas Conflict.
