United States decided to expel 60 Russian diplomats and closed the Russian consulate in Seattle in response to a nerve agent attack on Sergei Skripal in Britain. At the same time, Donald Tusk states that the decision to expel Russian diplomats has already been taken by 14 EU countries. This was reported by Reuters.
“To the Russian government we say: when you attack our friends, you will face serious consequences,” a senior U.S. administration official told reporters, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Moscow has denied responsibility for the attack and has retaliated against Britain’s expulsion of 23 Russians by ordering out the same number of Britons.
The Kremlin said ahead of the U.S. announcement that it would respond in kind.
As it was reported earlier, ex-colonel of Russia’s Main Intelligence Agency, Sergey Skripal and his daughter, poisoned in the center of Salisbury town in the evening of March 4, are still struggling for life in the intensive care unit of the local hospital. The British special services suppose that Skripals were poisoned by his ex-colleague Andrey Lugovoy, who acted on orders from Moscow.
British Prime Minister Theresa May decided to expel 23 Russian diplomats due to the incident in Salisbury. Russian diplomats had a week to leave Great Britain. Besides, the law enforcers will tighten control at the customs and check of private planes for the same reason. In return, Russia said it would expel 23 British diplomats as a reaction to Britain’s actions.
