Russian arrested in the US, accused of illegal import of military equipment, money laundering

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced the arrest of a Russian citizen in the United States. This is stated in the comments of the Information and Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that it was about a citizen of Russia, Dmitry Makarenko, who arrived on Saipan Island on December 29. He was detained by the FBI at the airport immediately on arrival.

"According to the information available, D. Makarenko is transferred from the Northern Mariana Islands to Florida. Our embassy in the USA continues to seek consular access to him, which, in accordance with the said Convention, should have been provided to us before January 2. We demand from Washington to clarify the reasons for the arrest and observe the rights of a citizen of Russia," the statement said.

Earlier, the media reported that Dmitry Makarenko was detained at the request of the FBI. On June 15, 2017, the Southern District Court of Florida accused him of illegally importing US military equipment, as well as money laundering.
