Russia is threatening Ukraine and is jeopardizing the security architecture of Europe as EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said in an interview.

“Russia has addressed to the United States and NATO proposals on the future of security in Europe that contravene the principles of the European security architecture. They are accompanied by a military build-up on the border of Ukraine and the open threat by Russia of taking military actions if these demands are not met,” he said.

The diplomat believes that by cooperating with the US and NATO, the EU must determine what it can do to maintain the security order in Europe and the principles underlying it, which are clearly under threat today. According to Borrell, that is the question on the agenda of this week's meeting of EU foreign and defense ministers in Brest.

Borrell said Russian ambitions aim to challenge the political and security order born of the post-Cold War era.

“Russia wants to portray the European Union as irrelevant and push for a strategic decoupling between the United States and Europe,” he added.
