The Russia Federation has presented its candidature for the election to the UN Council for Human Rights (UNHRC) for 2021-2023. Such actions took place as the US announced about its withdrawal from the organization. Spokesperson of the Russian diplomatic mission Fedor Strzhizhovsky claimed this as Interfax reported.
“Russia will continue its constructive work in the UNHRC that aims to support the equal dialogue and cooperation for human rights. Exactly with this goal Russia has presented its candidature for the election to the UNHRC for 2021-2023,” he said.
Moreover, Russia criticized the decision of the US on the withdrawal from the UNHRC. The Representative’s Office of Russia to UN thinks that the US “would like to turn the Council into the pliant tool for the promotion of its interests and punishment of the objectionable countries.”
Russia recognized that there are gaps in the UNHRC work, however, the Council proved its viability during the last time.”
The membership of Russia in the UNHRC ended in 2016. The same year it was not reelected during the voting at the UN General Assembly. Russia was criticized for the unilateralism and excessive focus on the situation in the Middle East.
As we reported U.S. envoy in the UN Nikki Hale announced the withdrawal of the US from the UN Council for Human Rights.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres did not support the decision of the US. However, Israeli Prime Minister thanked the US for the withdrawal. According to him, the Council was biased, hostile and anti-Israeli for many years.
