Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany, stated that the G7 member states would discuss the questions of Russia’s returning to this summit format only after a “substantial progress” concerning the issues in Ukraine is reached, as Reuters reports.
“Here we all agreed that a return of Russia to the G7-format summits can’t happen until substantial progress has been made in connection with the problems with Ukraine,” she said.
She stressed that that was “the common view”.
Earlier, Trump supported Russia’s returning to G8. Giuseppe Conte, Italy’s PM had the same position.
France and Canada spoke against it.
Russia was expelled from G8 after Crimea’s annexation, the G8 became G7.
