Srdjan Darmanovich, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro claimed that Russia interferes into the internal affairs of the country. It attempts to hinder the Government of Montenegro to join NATO. RTCG reports this.
‘Russia pointedly hindered our internal political issues, of course, we looked at this without approval. Russia pursues a policy of the spheres of interests in last 2-3 years and opposes the extension of NATO. We decided that we will define our main goals ourselves and we were surprised by the Russian interference and of course we defended’, Darmanovich said.
He accused Russia that its Intelligence service to pointedly support the opposition party of Montenegro that campaign against the Montenegro membership in NATO.
‘Our membership in NATO does not address against anyone, including Russia. However, we cannot agree that someone decides where we should be. We have economic relations with Russia, which is not our main partner. We have a lot of Russian tourists and Russian investments in our economy came to be ineffective’, Darmanovich claimed.
Montenegro will officially become a member of NATO on June 5. It will be accompanied by invitation letter from Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary General of NATO. Earlier, Donald Trump, the President of the USA signed the ratification of the joining of Montenegro to NATO. Last month the Senate supported the extension of the Alliance by a majority vote.
