Romania starts to preside at Council of European Union

The chairmanship of Romania at the Council of the European Union, which replaced Austria in rotation, has begun on January 1 and will last for six month

Romania has begun the six-month chairmanship at the Council of the European Union on January 1, 2019, as the representatives of the Romanian Presidency reported on Twitter.

“Happy New Year! We are ready to start our first presidency of the Council of the European Union. In 2019 we will work for a stronger, more united, more cohesive and more democratic Europe. Follow us on this journey!,” the message said.

The Ceremony of the handover of the presidency of the Council of the European Union took place on December 21, 2018.

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko congratulated the authority of Romania on the beginning of its presidency.

“Congratulate Romania on the beginning of the first in the history of country presidency of the Council of the European Union! I believe that the ambition and responsibility of our Romanian partners will help the European Union to come through one of the most difficult periods in its existence connected with the strengthening of the Russian confrontation with the West, Brexit and elections to the European Parliament and Russian aggression against Ukraine,” Poroshenko reported on Facebook.

Earlier Slovakia assumed the year-long presidency in the OSCE, which incorporates 57 member countries from Europe, North America and Central Asia.
