‘About 1.5 million Jews were killed on the territory of modern Ukraine during the Second World war. They were executed in woods, near ravines and pits, buried in common graves… Many accomplices in these crimes were of Ukrainian origin. Fighters of the OUN (the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists) were among these – they humiliated them, killed them and often handed them over to the Nazis. However, it is also true that 2.5 thousand righteous men of nations were the best of the mankind in those dark times. Most of the people, instead, kept silence. The relations between our nations are now facing the future, but we cannot let history to be forgotten – with all the scary and beautiful moments’, Israeli president Reuven Rivlin said during his speech at the Ukrainian parliament.
