Residents of the controlled territories of Donetsk and Luhansk have the constitutional right to vote in the upcoming local elections, but the authorities deprive them of it. This was stated by the Chairman of the political council of Opposition Platform - For Life political party, MP Viktor Medvedchuk.
He reminded that Opposition Platform - For Life party always defended the interests of the people on the matter.
“You know that we have been talking about this since July 15 of this year when the Verkhovna Rada adopted a resolution on elections, on the announcement of elections where there are well-known items 3, 4. Item 3 is the non-election of Luhansk and Donetsk regional councils, item 4 is the conditions under which elections in the controlled territories can take place, and these conditions directly and categorically contradict the Minsk agreements, which caused a corresponding reaction from Moscow, Donetsk, and Luhansk during the negotiations of the Tripartite Contact Group, as evidenced, inter alia, not only by the last meetings over the past month but even yesterday. Our faction consistently stood for the position that, first of all, elections to the Luhansk and Donetsk regional councils should take place,” Medvedchuk noted.
He stressed that the right of Ukrainian citizens living in this territory to elect regional councils could not be taken away.
"Moreover, it is even a political moment because the elections of the Luhansk regional council and the Donetsk regional council shows that the Ukrainian authorities believe that the people and territories of today's uncontrolled areas will return to the country. However, the inability to elect local authorities at the regional level shows that this government does not believe in the results of a peaceful settlement. Why there is no belief on its part? Because there is no political will for a peaceful solution to the conflict. Moreover, the Central Election Commission, continuing the tragic and consistent position of the Verkhovna Rada, went even further. It canceled the elections in 18 united territorial communities where 500 thousand citizens of Ukraine are deprived of the constitutional right to elect and be elected, I emphasize, in the controlled territory. Besides that, people in these territories could exercise their constitutional right to vote in 2015 (during local elections), in 2019 (during the presidential campaign), and in March and April where, incidentally, 88% voted for President Zelensky, and in 2019 (during the parliamentary campaign)," the politician added.
Medvedchukk asked the question - on what grounds was the election there canceled today? The politician is convinced that the decision is based on the political will expressed by Zelensky and his entourage.
"They do not want this election to take place, they do not want people to run in the election because they know how they will vote. They will vote the way the authorities deserve it today, and they are scared of it. They are now talking about the fact that on the 39th day (President Zelensky stated this yesterday) there are no casualties. This is true and it is a really great achievement for Ukraine. No shelling. The question arises: when there were attacks in 2015, when there were shellings and combat losses in 2019, it was still possible to hold elections there but not today. All of this infuriates because of such a political motivation for such a decision. They have simply deprived 500,000 people of the constitutional right to elect and be elected,” he concluded.
As we reported earlier, Ukraine is going to hold local elections on October 25, 2020.
