Banning the Russian media and social networks in Ukraine is something worth condemning, Reporters Sans Frontieres said as quoted by DW. Christian Mihr, the Director of the organization’s office in Germany commented on the most recent decision by the Ukrainian government.
‘From our point of view, this is unacceptable; it’s an attack on freedom of speech and information freedom. Social networks also matter a lot for the media freedom. It is about the largest social networks in the Russian-speaking environment. People can communicate and exchange views in these networks. This is why we condemn this ban as an assault against freedom of press and information.’ Mihr said.
Earlier today, President Petro Poroshenko signed the decree banning major Russian web portals and social networks in Ukraine; Yandex.ru, Vk.com, Odnoklassniki.ru users in Ukraine will lose their accounts and will have no access to the respective websites.
