“The international partners expressed support of the complex of reforms in the security and defense sphere held in Ukraine. This topic, among others, became the subject of discussion during the session of the Commission Ukraine-NATO at the level of the ambassadors, which took place on January 15 in Brussels. The SBU representatives participated in the session as the members of the official governmental delegation of Ukraine headed by Vice Prime Minister of European and EuroAtlantic integration Dmytro Kuleba,” the message said.
“It is really good that the SBU reform is in the NATO focus. The Alliance expressed the readiness to support the complex of reforms of the security sector of Ukraine, particularly, the SBU. The message was clear. For us it is really important to aim for experience and best practice of the countries-members of the Security service governance and reform,” SBU representative Serhiy Pun noted.
Ukrainian side thanked the partners for support and assured that the reform of the security sphere is one of the key issues in the state today.
“Ukraine should implement the changes, which would make the Security Service more modern and effective, more oriented for counter-espionage activities, fight against terrorism, defense of the state sovereignty and so on. The bill on the SBU reform aims for these points and it is prepared for the consideration in the parliament,” Pun added.
“NATO representatives, from their side, expressed the support of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of our state. And they underlined that the intensification of measures aiming for the fight against corruption, provision of the independence of the judicial branch of authority and reforming of SBU is highly relevant for Ukraine. Besides, the international partners on NATO expect that soon, particularly, within the session of the Joint working group of the high level Ukraine-NATO on military reform planned for the end of this month, the main directions of the reforming of the SBU will be presented. The partner side assured the Ukrainian delegation in the continued support of our state in the reforming by the Alliance,” the source concluded.
