President of Russia Vladimir Putin considers leader of Opposition Platform – For Life Viktor Medvedchuk one of the Ukrainian politicians, who in contrast to many others, stands for normalization of relations with Russia in fact as RIA News reported citing Putin’s Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.
“Who is Medvedchuk for Putin? He is for Putin one of the Ukrainian politicians, who in contrast to many others, stands for normalization of mutual relations between Russia and Ukraine,” Peskov answered to the journalists’ question whether or not Kremlin followed the trial over Medvedchuk and how his relations with Putin can be described.
Peskov added that Medvedchuk and Putin “know each other; they had meetings many times”.
“You know that in this case, Medvedchuk not just in principle but in fact implements his own position but I repeat again, he remains to be the Ukrainian politician,” he noted.
“Of course, we follow the events in Ukraine; of course, we, I repeat once more, we are not going to interfere in them anyway but we would like to be sure that the issue is not about the political witch hunt and cleaning of the political field to get rid of highly competitive political forces,” Peskov said.
On May 11, Prosecutor General of Ukraine Iryna Venedyktova served charges to leader of Opposition Platform – For Life Viktor Medvedchuk and his ally Taras Kozak. They are suspected of state treason and embezzlement of the national resources in Crimea. The next day, Medvedchuk and his lawyers arrived in the Prosecutor General’s Office.
On May 13, Kyiv court chose the restriction measure for Viktor Medvedchuk, the opposition MP and Chairman of the Political Council of Opposition Platform - For Life party. The lawmaker will remain under house arrest until July 9, 2021.
