Russian President Vladimir Putin called the US actions against the Russian RT and Sputnik "an attack on freedom of speech" and warned of Moscow's "mirror" response. He told this to journalists at a press conference following the results of the APEC summit, RIA Novosti reported.
"Without freedom of speech, democracy does not exist: an attack on our media in the United States is an attack on freedom of speech, without any doubt," Putin said.
According to him, now in the State Duma, deputies suggest including foreign media - CNN, Voice of America, Radio Liberty - to the law on foreign agents. "What is now being discussed in the State Duma - I saw it yesterday - it may be too harsh, but this is natural, since extreme assessments, sharp judgments and tough proposals often sound at the level of representative authorities. But we must definitely formulate our answer, and it will be a mirror answer, "Putin said.
We recall, the Ministry of Justice of the United States has appealed to the Russian television company RT (formerly Russia Today) with a proposal to register the American branch of the broadcaster as a "foreign agent".
As is known, in the January report of the US special services it was said that Russia had intervened in the presidential election of 2016. Separately in this report, RT TV channel is named, which experts consider "the main tool of the Kremlin's international propaganda". The document states that RT America "positions itself as an American channel and deliberately tries to hide any legal links with the Russian government."
