President of Russia Vladimir Putin held the phone talk with Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel. They discussed the possible continuation of the gas transit to EU through Ukraine as the press service of Putin reported.
“Due to the holding of the next round of the trilateral talks Russia-EU-Ukraine in Brussels, the exchange of opinions on the continuation of the transit of the Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine after the end of the proper contract at the end of 2019,” the message said.
On January 21, 2019, the trilateral gas talks took place in Brussels. Then Russia reported that it is ready to extend the acting contracts on gas transit after 2019. Then Foreign Minister of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin stated that the return of the contracts on Russian gas transit is impossible.
In April 2019, European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic reported that another round of the trilateral gas talks is planned for the end of May, after the election of the new president of Ukraine.
In June 2019, Ukraine, Russia, and the European Commission have agreed to hold the trilateral negotiations on the Russian gas transit across Ukraine's territory in September 2019.
