The Chairman of the Government of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, described Madrid's actions in relation to the autonomous region as "the worst attack since the times of dictator Francisco Franco." This is reported by El Pais.
In his speech, Puigdemont urged the parliament of the region to convene a plenary meeting to discuss the attempt to liquidate Catalonian self-government, after which "act accordingly."
Addressing the European community in English, the head of the regional government recalled that Catalonia is one of the oldest European democracies, which is fighting for fundamental rights.
On October 21, the Spanish authorities decided to dissolve the Catalan government.
