The head of Catalonia Carles Puigdemont called for a peaceful struggle for the independence of the region and stated that he does not recognize the Spanish authorities' decision on his resignation, El Pais reports.
"We will continue to work to create a free country," he said.
Puigdemont stated that he does not recognize the decision of the Spanish authorities on his resignation. According to him, they took this decision against the will of Catalonia.
Earlier we reported president of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani said that the declaration of independence adopted by the Parliament of Catalonia is a breach of the rule of law, the Spanish Constitution, and the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia, which are part of the EU’s legal framework, according to his statement published on the website of the European Parliament.
“No one in the European Union will recognize this declaration. More than ever, it is necessary to re-establish legality as a basis for dialogue and to guarantee the freedoms and rights of all Catalan citizens,” he emphasized.
Catalonia proclaimed the independence on October 27. However, the Spanish Senate stopped the autonomy of Catalonia.
