Protesters in Minsk demand to cancel West-2017 drills

Mass rally ‘for peaceful Belarus’ took place in Minsk on the official Independence Day. It was organized by the opposition leader Mikola Statkevich, reports Radio Svoboda.

 Statkevich called people to protest on the October Square against joint military exercises of Belarus with Russia West-2017, after which Russian troops can stay in Belarus.

According to Nasha Niva agency’s estimates, several hundred people gathered for the mass rallies.

Later, the column reached Independence Square where Statkevich declared the action complete.

As it was reported earlier NATO will strengthen presence in Eastern Europe during West 2017 drills. The joint Russian-Belarusian exercise is slated for autumn in Belarus; it will involve over 100,000 servicemen.
