Italian law enforcers detained Vitaliy Markiv, the local resident of Ukrainian origin, suspecting him of involvement in the murder of Italian photographer Andrea Rocchelli, who perished during Donbas conflict in 2014. That evoked protest by Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office.
According to Yevhen Yenin, Deputy Prosecutor General, the Ukrainian side is surprised by the detention of the Ukrainian soldier. ‘The Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine demands that the Italian side either release Markiv immediately or provide fundamental evidence of his guilt,’ he posted at Facebook.
Yenin added that Ukrainian law enforcers are looking into the death of Rocchelli and his interpreter Andrei Mironov that took place near Slovyansk, Donetsk region, in May 2014.
The Ukrainian side insists that the mortar attack that led to their death was launched by pro-Russian separatists, not the Ukrainian military.
