The Office of the President of Ukraine discussed with Defense Attaché Brittany Stewart and other representatives of the US Embassy in Ukraine the preparations for Volodymyr Zelensky's visit to the United States. The talks were held by Roman Mashovets, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, as the press center of the Office of the President of Ukraine reports.
During the meeting, they discussed the preparation of bilateral agreements on deepening Ukrainian-American defense cooperation, development of projects in the field of research and testing, providing Ukraine with US security assistance.
Roman Mashovets noted that the US Department of Defense announced a decision to provide Ukraine with the second part of assistance under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative in the amount of $ 150 million on June 11, and it is important for strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities.
The confabulators touched also upon key issues of reforming the security and defense sector of Ukraine, including improving the system of military management, defense planning, strengthening democratic civilian control over the defense forces and the division of powers between the Minister of Defense and the Commander-in-Chief.
"These issues are also planned to be regulated by the draft law On Amendments to Certain Laws of Ukraine on Improving Defense Planning Procedures ", which is being processed by the Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence and is being prepared for second reading in the Verkhovna Rada," the statement says.
The Deputy Head of the President's Office also informed the American side about the progress of the reform of the defense industry and the preparation of a strategy for the development of Ukraine's defense industry for approval by the National Security and Defense Council. Roman Mashovets noted that the approach to the system of management of state-owned objects in the defense industry is changing, the ultimate goal of which is to create two vertically integrated structures - state-owned holding companies. As a result of the reform, the Ukrainian defense industry should become more efficient, transparent and open to international cooperation, including with the United States.
