President of Abkhazia occupied by Russia Raul Khajimba decided to resign, Interfax reports.

“Yes, I resigned,” Khajimba confirmed.

When asked if he would participate in the extraordinary presidential elections, he replied: "Time will tell."

Earlier, protesters stormed the cottage of Raul Khajimba, demanding his resignation.

Note that today the assistant to the president of Russia Vladislav Surkov arrived in Sukhumi. It should help in resolving the political crisis in the republic.

On the morning of January 9, opposition activists gathered in front of the Abkhaz Drama Theater in Sukhumi. Soon they moved to the building of the "presidential administration" of the unrecognized republic and tried to storm it.

Participants in the rally argue that the incumbent president, Raul Khajimba, did not get the majority of votes in the last “head of the republic’s” elections and demand new elections. The "presidential administration" says this is the coup attempt.
