The State Bureau of Investigations of Ukraine has closed books on pre-trial investigation against former president Viktor Yanukovych and his associates in the case of murders of Euromaidan activists in February 2014. The press department of the Office of Prosecutor General reported that on November 17.
Investigators of the State Bureau of Investigation have completed the pre-trial investigation of the former president of Ukraine and 9 high-ranking police officers who on 18-20 February 2014 organized a violent opposition to the protesters in the center of the capital", - the statement reads. The prosecutor's office noted that since the individuals have been staying outside of Ukraine since 2014, the pre-trial investigation took place in absentia. The defense parties have already been given access to the materials. After familiarization, the indictment will be sent to the court.
According to the investigation, Viktor Yanukovych, former head of the SBU Oleksandr Yakymenko, former Interior Minister Oleksandr Zakharchenko, Valery Mazan, the former head of the Interior Ministry Department in Kyiv, and his deputies, former Interior Ministry Internal Troops Commander Stanislav Shulyak, former Minister of Defense Pavlo Lebedev and the commander of the Kyiv regiment of Berkut riot police overpowered the authorities and organized the suppression of protest actions by force.
In particular, they are charged with the use of physical violence, special equipment, military vehicles, and firearms by law enforcement officers and servicemen for violent resistance and dispersal of protesters. Besides, members of Yanukovych's criminal gang orchestrated the dispersal of unarmed activists when they marched towards the Ukrainian Parliament; besides the assault on Maidan was conducted under the disguise of a counter-terrorism operation on February 18, 2014. On February 20, 2014, the officials organized the shootout of Euromaidan activists that was conducted by Berkut riot police and government-hired thugs.
"Such actions of the former president and his law enforcement officers caused massive casualties among the protesters in central Kyiv, including the deaths of 67 people. A total of 887 citizens and 132 law enforcement officers were injured. A total of 887 people and 132 law enforcers were injured", the authority reported.
It appears that 1019 episodes of criminal acts were investigated in the framework of the criminal case. The production materials amounted to over 1,500 volumes. Prosecutors and investigators conducted over 4500 drinking sessions, over 1000 investigative experiments, as well as over 3500 forensic, ballistic, complex, cytological, chemical examinations.
