UN Security Council vote on the legality of Jewish settlements in Palestine could lead to the decision by United States to refuse to participate in the organizations belonging to the UN. According to the Washington Post, one of the variants of such action is to refuse to participate in the UNESCO financing.
As the newspaper notes, some of the US Congress Senators call for such measures. "Almost every Republican will feel that this is a betrayal of Israel, and the only answer that we have is the power of the wallet," Washington Post cited the words of the Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on the State Department appropriations and foreign operations, Lindsey Graham.
At the same time, the publication noted that the US is one of the major UN donor countries and their contributions make up 22% of the annual United Nations budget. However, Washington's involvement in the financing of the United Nations is required and regulated by the previously ratified international treaties. In this regard the rejection of them may require a revision of the legislation.
Earlier, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution demanding an end to Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory.
