Poroshenko urges Serbia to recognize 1933 Holodomor

Ukrainian leader Petro Poroshenko called on the Serbian parliament to consider the 1933 Great Famine in Ukraine the act of genocide of the Ukrainian people. He said that during his meeting with Maja Gojkovic, the head of Serbia's Skupstina, the presidential service reported.

The two politicians also discussed the parliamentary cooperation within the parliamentary assemblies' activity.

The sides agreed on mutual respect of sovereignty and territorial integrity of each other's countries. In this regard, the previous visits of Serbian MPs to the occupied Crimea is unacceptable.

The Holodomor in Ukraine has been recognized as genocide in nine states of the USA: Washington, Wisconsin, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Oregon and Pennsylvania.

The relevant decision was taken by the parliaments of several countries, in particular, Canada, Australia, Georgia, Poland, Portugal, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Chile.

There were three Holodomors in the 20th century: in 1921-1923, 1932-1933, 1946-1947. The Holodomor of 1923-1933 is the only one admitted as a genocide. The events of 1921-1923 and 1946-1947 are constituted as a famine, which genocidal nature has not been proved yet.

The Holodomor lasted for 17 months – from April 1932 to November 1933. The researchers have not defined the number of victims yet. They name the numbers from 1,8 million to 10 million. Most of the experts believe that the number of victims is from 3 to 3,5 million.
