President Petro Poroshenko called on the EU member countries and the international organizations to recognize the Holodomor an act of genocide of the Ukrainian nation. He posted this on Twitter after a meeting with Miroslav Lajcak, the Slovakian foreign minister.
'I urge the EU countries and international organizations to follow the U.S. example and recognize the act of genocide of the Ukrainian nation', he wrote.
On October 4, the U.S. Senate officially recognized the 1933 Great Famine as the act of genocide of the Ukrainian nation.
"The U.S. Senate adopted the two-party resolution by unanimous vote, which became the first ever legislative act of the U.S. Congress, where Holodomor 1932-1933 is recognized as the genocide of the Ukrainian nation," the message said.
It is noted that the Senate included the conclusion of the government commission of the U.S. on the famine in Ukraine dated April 22, 1988 to the document. It states that "Stalin and his environment committed genocide against the Ukrainians."
Thus, the resolution condemns the systematic violations of the human rights, including the rights for the self-determination and freedom of speech committed by the Soviet government against the Ukrainian people, expresses the condolences to the victims and their families as well as contains the urge to spread the information to raise awareness in the world about the artificial nature of this tragedy.
