Ukraine appreciates words of support of Domagoj Vida and Ognjen Vukojević, the Croatian footballers who devoted their victory over Russia in 2018 World Cup. The president claimed this on his page on Facebook.
‘Croatians know like nobody else what support means in the times of difficulties, in days of heavy confrontation. Supporting words of Domagoj and Ognjen became more valuable. Ukraine appreciates this support and indeed is ready to encourage the real friends,’ the President claimed.
Earlier, a video appeared on the internet with Vida and coaches of Ognjen Vukojević’s team after the match with Russia. Vida was chanting ‘Glory to Ukraine!’ Vukojević says it is a victory of Dinamo and for Ukraine.
Under the Charter of FIFA, various political performances by footballers are prohibited. This is why FIFA promised to assess the information and check the video message of the footballers for violation of the rules.
Football Federation of Ukraine interceded for the footballer of Croatian national team. Andriy Pavelko claimed on his page on Facebook that the footballer who has been playing for Dinamo for many years and living in Ukraine has a right to express its respect to the country and its citizens.
Also, he has mentioned that he had sent letters to the administration of FIFA and UEFA to defend the footballer, insisting that ‘the footballer has a right to his position and respect our country’.
Reportedly, the 2018 World Cup match between Croatia and Russia took place at the Fisht stadium in Sochi. The main and extra time was completed with a score of 2:2. One of the goals was scored by Vida. Croatian footballers were more accurate at the series of penalty kicks – 4:3.
