Poroshenko signs bill which bans Russians from participating in elections in Ukraine

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed the bill which bans Russians from participating in the elections process in Ukraine. Relevant information is contained in the card of the draft law No. 9524

The document proposes amendments to the law on presidential elections, elections to the Verkhovna Rada (scheduled for autumn 2019), and local elections.

It is established that a person, who is a citizen of a state aggressor and a person, whose offer is initiated or submitted by a state aggressor cannot be the observers at the elections (including the representatives of the foreign states).

Within a long-term mission of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), two Russian observers would head to Kyiv to observe the Ukrainian presidential campaign on February 11 -  Yelizaveta Borisova from the Russian Public Institute of Electoral Law and Khristina Bogdanova from the Institute of Public Electoral Diplomacy. 

The Verkhovna Rada registered the bill No.9524 which calls for ruling out the participation of the observers from the aggressor state in the presidential and parliamentary elections in Ukraine.

ODIHR offered to include two citizens of Russia to the list of the mission on the observation of the Ukrainian presidential elections on 31 March 2019, despite the conditions declared by Ukraine.

As we reported earlier, The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Ukraine has created 199 district election commissions for the upcoming presidential election on March 31.

The election campaign has officially started on December 31, 2018. Registration of the candidates was closed on February 4, 2019, and on February 9, the final list of presidential candidates is expected to appear. The candidates would be able to withdraw their candidacy until March 7, 2019.
