Members of the Yalta European Strategy (YES) Supervisory Board congratulated President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko on holding democratic presidential elections and invited him to take part in the YES conference in September.
According to the press service of the President, YES board members noted the holding of fair and transparent presidential elections in Ukraine in full compliance with the electoral standards of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR).
“The head of state was invited to take part in the September YES conference,” the statement reads.
In turn, Poroshenko stressed that these elections are very important for Ukraine, since we are talking about the independence and sovereignty of our country. “Ukraine is fighting for its sovereignty and independence in the conditions of Russian aggression and intervention of the aggressor state in the course of the election campaign,” he said.
The Ukrainian president stressed that it is critical to continue reforms on the path to full membership in NATO and future membership in the European Union.
A member of the YES supervisory board, the former NATO Secretary General, presidential adviser to Ukraine, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, noted the high level of democracy demonstrated by Ukraine in the presidential elections.
“I also want to congratulate you, Mr. President, on the reforms that have been implemented in the last four or five years. We need to clearly realize that Ukraine has achieved much more in reforms in recent years than in its entire independence history,” stressed Rasmussen.
He expressed the hope that the president will continue his path of reform for Ukraine’s accession to NATO and the EU.
