Poroshenko counts on Spain's support in release of Ukrainian political prisoners

Petro Poroshenko, the President of Ukraine, met with King Felipe VI during his visit to Spain and expressed hope that Spanish side assists Ukraine to release Ukrainians hostages and political prisoners kept in Russia, as the press office of the President’s Administration reported.

“Petro Poroshenko told King Felipe VI about the development of the situation on the temporarily occupied Donbas and Crimea territories. The Head of Ukraine expressed his hope on the support of the Spanish side in the process of releasing Ukrainians hostages and political prisoners kept in Russia,” the message says.

At the meeting, the interlocutors noted that friendship and mutual respect remain the main principles characterizing the bilateral cooperation between Ukraine and Spain since the establishment of diplomatic relationships 25 years ago.

Poroshenko acknowledged Spain’s support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. In his turn, King Felipe VI  noted Ukraine’s exact position concerning the support of Spanish unity.

Earlier, Poroshenko paid an official visit to Spain on June 2-4. The Head of the State had meetings with Madrid’s authorities and the Ukrainian community.
