Poroshenko calls on Latvia to help Ukraine return confiscated 50 million euros

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko met with the President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis, the press service of the Presidential Administration reports.

Poroshenko thanked Latvia for its consistent support of the Ukrainians visa-free regime, as well as for the policy regarding sanctions against Russia because of its aggression against Ukraine.

The sides agreed to strengthen cooperation between the two countries at the international level and within international organizations.

Poroshenko addressed the Raimonds Vējonis with the request to assist the investigation of Ukrainian law enforcement authorities in cases against members of the previous government and the return of confiscated Ukraine’s money by Latvian government.

Earlier media reported about the confiscation of 50 million euros from the accounts of fugitive Ukrainian officials from the times of Viktor Yanukovych. According to assumptions, this amount could have been confiscated from the accounts of the former First Deputy Prime Minister Sergey Arbuzov.

Latvia confirmed that the money are connected with Ukraine and were seized as part of a special procedure, with no criminal conviction.

Recall that Latvia was reported to have confiscated 50 million euros from the accounts of fugitive Ukrainian officials of the times of Viktor Yanukovych. According to assumptions, the money could have been confiscated from the accounts of the former First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Serhiy Arbuzov.
