Poroshenko awards Patriarch Bartholomew First Class Order of Merit

The award ceremony took place after the ceremony of signing Tomos about the autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine

President Petro Poroshenko awarded the first-class Order of Merit to His Holiness Bartholomew, the Ecumenical Patriarch and the Archbishop of Constantinople. It is reported by the press service of the head of state.

"Petro Poroshenko presented the award to His Holiness for his outstanding personal contribution in the development of the autocephalous local Orthodox Church of Ukraine, raising the authority of Orthodoxy in the world, many years of activity, establishing ideals of spirituality, mercy and interfaith harmony", the report says.

In this case, it is added that the Ecumenical Patriarch, in turn, awarded the head of the Ukrainian state a commemorative medal, the Cross of Panagiy Pammacaristos.

Earlier, the ceremony of signing the Tomos of autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church was held in Istanbul, 112 Ukraine broadcasted the event. 

The Ukrainian delegation led by President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and primate of the UOC Metropolitan Epifaniy were at the ceremony of the signing.

A prayer service was held prior to the signing the Tomos; it lasted 20 minutes.  

Tomorrow, January 6, a divine liturgy will take place in St. George's Cathedral, after which the Tomos will be passed to Metropolitan Epifaniy.
