The United States provides Ukraine with military assistance to protect it from aggressive actions by Russia. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated this on Saturday, February 15, during a speech at the Munich Security Conference, DW reports.
"Russia has captured Crimea and parts of eastern Ukraine and Georgia. The US is arming Ukraine to help this brave country defend itself against Russian aggression," - he said.
The US Secretary of State also recalled how, during his official trip to Kyiv in late January, he visited a military hospital where a wounded Ukrainian officer presented him with a patch of his military unit as a keepsake. "And it reminded me that for the sake of sovereignty, you need to fight and fight together," said Pompeo.
He also criticized the actions of Russia, Iran, and China. "Some countries are still striving to create empires (...) Now, more than thirty years after the fall of the (Berlin) wall, countries that do not respect sovereignty still threaten us," said Pompeo. He also noted that Russia is engaged in misinformation, "trying to set our citizens against each other."
As we reported before, Acting Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Reeker will accompany Mike Pompeo during the Munich Security Conference on February 14.
