Mike Pompeo, the U.S. Secretary of the State promised military assistance for Ukraine so that it could boost the defenses amidst the spell of Russian aggression in the Kerch Strait. President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said this in his interview with CNN.
'Ukraine’s President Poroshenko tells me that during a phone call with Mike Pompeo, the U.S. Secretary of State pledged “full assistance, including military assistance,” to protect Ukrainian sovereignty', CNN's Christiane Amanpour wrote on Twitter.
As is known, the Ukrainian Parliament passed the bill, which confirmed the presidential decree on imposing the martial law in Ukraine. This is due to the crisis in Azov Sea, where Russian naval group attacked and captured three Ukrainian vessels along with the crew.
Earlier, Poroshenko had an interview with reporters of three Ukrainian TV channels; in it, he said that the attack of the Russian Navy and the subsequent capture of Ukrainian vessels in the Sea of Azov is an extraordinary event, the first of such kind over four and a half years of the Russian aggression. The President explained why Ukraine imposed martial law just now, not any other time since the beginning of the Russian aggression in Ukraine in spring 2014. 'Actually, what happened on November 25 was an extraordinary event, first time over 4.5 years of the Russian aggression. Officially, without tearing down their chevrons, without any 'little green men', Russian military vessels - in huge amount - attacked the ships of Ukraine's Armed Forces', Poroshenko said. The president stressed that the actual threat of full-fledged Russian military invasion in Ukraine remains.
