US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed the visit of an American official to Ukraine. This was reported on the US Department of State website.
The parties also discussed the situation in the Middle East. It is noted that Pompeo appreciated Ukraine’s condemnation of the attack on the US Embassy in Baghdad, reaffirmed the US strong support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and emphasized the long-term strategic partnership between the countries.
Earlier it was expected that Mike Pompeo will visit Ukraine on January 3. And on January 1, it became known that he had postponed a visit to Ukraine because of the situation in Iraq.
Mike Pompeo tried to convince President Donald Trump to kill Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.

Trump agreed on such a response to Iran at the end of December when Pentagon Head Mark Esper supported Pompeo’s position.

According to the newspaper, initially, the U.S. Defense Department stood against the elimination of the Iranian general as the military should be redeployed to the Middle East, while Pentagon wanted to enhance the positions in East Asia. Trump also intended to withdraw American troops from the Middle East as it was one of his promises during the election campaign.

The idea of Pompeo was supported after the shelling of the military base on December 27 when one American contract soldier was killed and the military were wounded.
