The EU and Germany should finally refuse from the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 after the poisoning of Russian oppositionist Alexei Navalny as Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported citing PM of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki stated.
“The attempt to poison the main activist of the opposition with a banned chemical in two days before the planned debates on the relations about the EU and Russia, which had to take place in Berlin, is a challenge for the whole democratic society. You cannot threaten Russia with your index finger afar and then jump into Nord Stream 2 project with Gazprom group,” Morawiecki stated.
He underlined that the construction of the Nord Stream 2 breaks the energy policy of the EU from the inside and it will put Europe in dependence on the supplies of the Russian gas. Moreover, the launch of the gas pipeline will provide the Russian oligarchs with serious financial infusion. However, the main threat, according to the Polish PM, is that Russia under the cover of economic cooperation will obtain the influence on the behavior of one of the most important economic and political partner of the EU and NATO: Germany.
PM of Poland noted that not only his country insists on the necessity to stop the Nord Stream 2 project. Some of the German politicians also support this opinion.
Earlier, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki calls on the EU countries to stop the implementation of Nord Stream 2, arguing the need for energy solidarity and protection of the interests of Belarus and Ukraine.
On September 6, Foreign Minister of Germany Heiko Maas stated that the response of the Kremlin concerning the responsibility for the poisoning of Navalny might determine whether or not Germany changes its support for Nord Stream 2 project, which will supply Russian gas to Germany.
Earlier, Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel confirmed the intention of her government to continue and finish the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
