During the presidential election campaign, Ukrainians are witnessing the unrealistic plans of Donbas conflict peaceful settlement. This was stated by Viktor Medvedchuk, Chairman of the Political Council of “Opposition Platform – For Life” political party, on the air of 112 Ukraine.
“If you start analyzing the plan, proposed by current president Petro Poroshenko... he, naturally, says there is no alternative to the Minsk agreements... when he agrees that the Minsk agreements should be implemented, and makes a kind of footnote: “on our terms,” then, firstly, it is not clear what is at stake, and, secondly, we can say that he had the opportunity to do it earlier," said Medvedchuk.
At the same time, he stressed that other candidates, such as Yulia Tymoshenko and Volodymyr Zelensky, say something completely different. "They do not recognize the Minsk agreements and believe that these problems should be solved within the framework of the Budapest memorandum... “They say: The format should be changed. The Normandy format, the Minsk agreements mean nothing, we must return to the Budapest memorandum.” This is wrong, moreover, this is unjustified," the politician believes.
Medvedchuk recalled that the Budapest Memorandum is a guarantee of Ukraine's territorial integrity, which was once given by the UK, the United States, and Russia, and later joined by China and France (regarding the non-use of nuclear weapons).
“What is the link between the memorandum and Donbas conflict? Moreover, when we talk about any other format, including the Budapest one, we must understand that we cannot do this without taking into account the interests of Donetsk and Luhansk. And the plan of Zelensky, who also joins the Budapest memorandum (in his thoughts and plans for a peaceful settlement), and the plan of Tymoshenko concerns only Russia that should be there. And the principle is simple: "We will force Russia, through international sanctions, through ultimatums to make the situation when Donetsk and Luhansk will voluntarily return to Kyiv. And the people should return, and the weapons should be removed, and the equipment should be withdrawn, and all other problems should be solved so that Ukraine has nothing left to do." But at the same time, there is Russia’s position. We may like it or don’t like it, but we have to take it into account," he said.
Earlier, Medvedchuk said that the current government is not interested in returning people from Donbas, because they would never vote for it during the presidential and parliamentary elections.
