According to the Seafarers Journal, among the eight hostages, six are Ukrainians (captain, chief mate, 2nd mate, chief mech, electrician and wiper). The daughter of one of the captured sailors said that her father works on the STEVIA vessel as the chief mate. The side of the ship owner and agent does not provide any information. She received confirmation that her dad was captured, from one of the sailors on board.
"On December 16, in Nigeria, 8 people (6 Ukrainians) were taken prisoner from the cargo ship STEVIA, the owners of which have become the Albanians since May 2020. Among the hostages is my dad, Semen Reznichenko, the senior mate of the captain," the daughter of one of the sailors said.
The vessel, registered in Cameroon, was en route from southern Nigeria to Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, when it was believed to have been attacked by local Nigerian pirates. This is the 27th kidnapping case in the region in 2020, with 138 people abducted by pirates, according to the analyst report.
