The Pentagon said that the withdrawal of some American troops from Germany and their redeployment are intended to strengthen the containment of Russia. This was stated by US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper, Fox News reports.

"We will redeploy more troops to the east, closer to the border with Russia," Mark Esper said.

The United States will withdraw 12,000 of its military personnel from Germany, most of them will return to America, others will be relocated to Italy and Belgium.

Esper added that most NATO allies supported this decision, which was previously made by US President Donald Trump.

Earlier it was reported that the U.S. military performed drills in the Black Sea. The Navy and Air Force went for a joint exercise, the command of the 6th Fleet reports.

USS Porter, the guided-missile destroyer, Poseidon P-8A reconnaissance plane, four F-16 fighter jets, an MQ-9 Reaper drone, and KC-135 Stratotanker participated in the drills.

"The purpose of this training event was to exercise command and control in a joint training environment with our U.S. Air Force brothers and sisters to increase our tactical proficiency, and Porter’s crew did just that,” said Cmdr. Craig Trent, Porter’s commanding officer. “This training enabled us to continue to build on our combined capability to quickly and effectively respond to any threats in the complex maritime environment”, reads the report.
