Pechersk district court of Kyiv chose the restriction measure for Viktor Medvedchuk, the opposition MP and Chairman of the Political Council of Opposition Platform - For Life party. The lawmaker will remain under house arrest until July 9, 2021.
Prosecutor asked the court to arrest Medvedchuk until July 10 or define the bail in the amount of 10 million US dollars.
Medvedchuk's lawyer claimed that there is no proof that the MP will flee from justice. The politician himself called the charges "politically motivated".
MPs from Opposition Platform - For Life party offered to act as surety for Medvedchuk. However, the judge declined that offer.
Earlier, the politician left the Prosecutor General's Office, having looked through the charges against him. "I read (the suspicion) and took a copy. The accusations are unfounded, unsubstantiated and, in general, they can be called political", Medvedchuk told Interfax news agency while leaving the building.
