Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan stated about the attempt of the military coup after the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Armenia demanded the resign of the government and the PM, as Newsarmenia reported.
Earlier, Pashinyan made a decision to dismiss first deputy Head of the General Staff Tiran Khachatryan.
The Armenian Army strongly protested due to the dismissal of Khachatryan and urged the government headed by Pashinyan to resign.
Pashinyan stated in response that the statement of the General Staff is an attempt at the military coup.
“I invite all our supporters to the Republic Square. Soon, I will address to society on live,” he said.
Last week, the protests started against PM Nikol Pashinyan in Yerevan. The termless protests were announced until the PM resigns.
On November 9, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev agreed to cease the war in Nagorno-Karabakh. About 1,960 Russian peacekeepers with hardware should enter the region for at least five years as the guarantees. According to the agreement, Agdam district should be returned to Azerbaijan until November 20, Kalbajar district – until November 15, and Lachin district should be returned until December 1.
On November 14, Armenia and Azerbaijan started the exchange of the bodies of servicemen killed in the battles in Nagorno-Karabakh.
On December 12, Armenia and Azerbaijan accused each other of violating a peace deal that ended six weeks of fighting over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.
