Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian parliament, will consider criminalization of illegal crossing of the Ukrainian border by Russians or other citizens acting in Russia’s interests.

The respective bill was submitted in the parliament by Ukrainian MPs Iryna Lutsenko and Artur Gerasymov. They offer detention and imprisonment up to eight years as a punishment for the perpetrators carrying no IDs or presenting IDs with fake information in them.

If the law violation took place once, the person may face up to 3 years in jail. If perpetrated again or by a group of trespassers, the court could sentence them to five years-long term. In case the perpetrators used weapons when illegally crossing the border, they can be put into jail for eight years.

Currently, the Ukrainian law foresees administrative responsibility for illegal crossing of the state border; the trespassers pay fine.
