The Ukrainian Parliament adopted a bill, which includes greater responsibility for illegal export logs and timber products. 234 MPs voted positively for the bill.

The bill includes increasing of annual wood production amount from 20 mln m3 to 25 mln.
A new article will be introduced in the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The article on illegal export of timber production (unmanufactured), a sawn wood of valuable and rare tree species. Smuggling all these commodities will include responsibility in the form of imprisonment from three to five years. If the person committed the offense for the second time or in big amounts, he will be sentenced to five-ten years of imprisonment. His property will be confiscated and he will be deprived of the right to hold certain posts for up to three years.
In case, an organized group committed the offense in big amounts then they will be sentenced to 10-12 years of imprisonment with confiscation of the property and deprivation of the right to hold certain posts up to three years.
Earlier, the illegal woodcutting was providing a fine in the amount of 32-65 USD, restriction of liberty for up to six months or three years of imprisonment.
The updated article includes punishment for woodcutting and illegal export, storage, and sale of timber.
Also, the bill includes the increase of the fines for damaging the woods. Up to 160 USD for damaging woods for officials and 60 USD for civilians.
The document will come into force from January 1, 2019. Fuelwood is prohibited to export for eight years.
As we reported earlier, the moratorium on the export of all species of unmanufactured timber except for pine was introduced on November 1, 2015. The bill came into force on January 1, 2017.
