Previously, Orban stated that Hungary supports Ukraine in conflict with Russia - in spite of the fact that the Ukrainian government took an anti-Hungarian position. On another occasion, he said that Ukraine has no prospects of entering the EU and NATO unless it gets back onto the path of friendship and strategic partnership with Hungary.

Ukraine-Hungary relations worsened when the Ukrainian Parliament approved the education law, which stipulates that the kids representing the national minorities in Ukraine will be gradually transferred to education based on the use of Ukrainian language, and they will be able to learn their mother language optionally.
