On the anniversary of the Ilovaisk tragedy, diplomats from the US Embassy in Ukraine called on Russia to end its aggression against Ukraine. They posted the corresponding publication on their Facebook page.
"We support the people of Ukraine and call on Russia to end its aggression against Ukraine," the message says.
The diplomats also noted that on the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine, everyone who gave their lives for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state should be remembered.
In 2014, Ukrainian defenders were surrounded near Ilovaisk. The command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine agreed on the arrangement of the "green corridor". The military in the Ilovaisk region laid down their arms and agreed to leave through this corridor. However, there they were awaited by an ambush of militants. As a result, 366 soldiers were killed, 429 were injured, 300 soldiers were taken prisoner, and another 24 were missing.
On August 24, 2019, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree establishing the Day of Remembrance for the Defenders of Ukraine on the day when the bloody events took place near Ilovaisk.
This year, President of Ukraine honored the memory of the fallen soldiers. Together with the head of the Office of the President Andriy Yermak, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Dmytro Razumkov and Prime Minister Denys Shmygal, he laid flowers at the Wall of Memory of the Fallen for our country in Kyiv.
