On July 11, Ukraine’s Ombudsman Lyudmyla Denisova held a meeting with the US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch. During the meeting, the Denisova noted it was necessary to put international pressure on Russian Federation to release Ukrainian political prisoners. This was reported by the press service of the Ombudsman.
"I ask you to influence the Russian Federation so that they allow at least one representative who is not dependent on Russia to visit Ukrainian political prisoners. We still do not have a documentary confirmation of the words of Russian Ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova that Oleg Sentsov feels well, and that he is not being forced to eat," Denisova said.
In response, Marie Yovanovitch noted that the US would continue to support Ukraine as a state built on the principles of democracy and adheres to all international treaties and conventions.
"The US Ambassador in Moscow has asked for a permission to visit Oleg Sentsov, but he never received a response from the Russian side. On our part, we try to communicate with the media and inform in our social networks about the fate of Ukrainian citizens who are illegally detained in Russia and Crimea, "the Ambassador emphasized.
In addition, Lyudmyla Denisova and Marie Yovanovitch discussed the exchange of prisoners between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, the problems of discrimination against members of the Roma national minority, respect for the rights of internally displaced persons and the LGBT community.
As it was reported earlier, Russian Federation is trying to force Russian citizenship on Oleg Sentsov, according to Lyudmyla Denisova.
“Russia is trying to force the Russian citizenship to him – as punishment. It is a weird approach. Citizenship should be a benefit, not punishment,” she said.
Besides, Denisova told that Tatyana Moskalkova denied her visit Sentsov as Denisova is not a Russian citizen.
