The current number of MPs in the Verkhovna Rada should be cut down to 225 people. Viktor Medvedchuk, the Chairman of Political Council of Opposition Platform - For Life party said this on the sidewalks of the parliamentary session on Tuesday, September 3.
Medvedchuk reiterated that this political force has been standing for shortening the number of lawmakers in Ukraine for a while now.
"If you remember, there was a referendum in 2000, and I was one of the organizers of this referendum. Indeed, we believed this number should be reduced", he said. The politician added that this step should be implemented within the procedure of amending the Constitution.
"There's an initiative in this regard; our party put it on the website, and we believe the number should be cut not to 300, but to 225 MPs, and see to it that they are actually elected under the proportional system with the open lists. That's our position", Medvedchuk emphasized.
"Things that are taking place or those yet to happen are another violation of the procedure. Another illegal committee, another decision in support of the illegal committee, another deprivation of MPs of their right to file the alternative draft law within five days, according to the law about the order", - this was Medvedchuk's comment on the legislative process that is currently taking place at the Parliament.
Recently, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky offered the Parliament to cut the number of MPs from 450 to 300. The presidential draft bill is now on the agenda of the current parliamentary session.
