In August, the number of asylum seekers in the EU increased by 40% compared to the same period a year ago. This is attributed, among other things, to the wave of refugees from Afghanistan. This was stated by the director of the European Agency for the Support of Asylum (EASO) Nina Gregory, reports DW.

In total, 56 thousand such applications were registered in the EU countries in August 2021.

Afghan citizens alone filed about 10,000 asylum applications in the EU in August. Some of these statements came from those who were evacuated from Afghanistan by plane from Kabul airport.

In addition, Afghans, who have been living in Europe for a long time, also applied for asylum.
