U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken

US Secretary of the State Antony Blinken claimed that the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which runs from Russia to Germany, contradicts interests of the EU and Ukraine alike. He said so during his speech to Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General, wrote Reuters.

"President Biden has been very clear, he believes the pipeline is a bad idea, bad for Europe, bad for the United States, ultimately it is in contradiction to the EU’s own security goals", the US official said.

He also reiterated that the initiative can undermine interests of Ukraine, Poland and a number of close partners and allies of the United States. According to Blinken, the U.S. legal framework obliges Washington to introduce sanctions against the companies involved in the Nord Stream 2 construction.

The US believes that the Nord Stream 2 will bypass Ukraine, potentially stripping it of its valuable transit fees. The American side also assumes that the gas pipeline will also increase Europe's power dependence from Russia and create competition over the supplies of liquefied natural gas from the US.

According to analysts, the pipeline is now ready by almost 95 percent; the works could be over by September.
