No decisions regarding European security, including the response to the fact of Russian aggression against Ukraine, will be made without the direct participation of the European Union. This was stated by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen during a joint press conference with French President Emanuel Macron, Ukrinform reports.

This is how the President of the European Commission answered questions from the press regarding the fact that the European Union, allegedly, remained outside the dialogue between the US and Russia on European security.

“One thing is very clear - no decisions will happen without Europe. For example, the European Union is very involved when it comes to supporting Ukraine. I visited Ukraine in October, we delivered 6 billion euros in financial assistance and we are irreplaceable (partners) in ensuring the energy security of Ukraine. The EU applied sanctions against Russia in response to its aggression. All these are facts. Before that, we have a Normandy format with the participation of France and Germany, "said the President of the European Commission.

She noted that now the European Union is facing great tension in the neighborhood, which is associated with Russia's military pressure on Ukraine and Russia's attempts to intimidate Moldova.

Earlier today, French Foreign Minister Yves Le Drian said that the Russian leadership is trying to remove the European Union from discussing the situation around Ukraine, planning direct negotiations with the United States. He warned that possible Russian military action in Ukraine would in any case lead to "serious strategic consequences", one of which could be the revision of the agreement on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. The French minister added that despite Putin's assurances of the withdrawal of Russian troops from the border with Ukraine, Paris did not notice that this actually happened.
