In the beginning of 2022 protests erupted in Kazakhstan after the increase in the price of liquefied gas. Demonstrators announced an indefinite action. Demands to reduce the price of gas have grown into calls for the resignation of the president and government. The Internet has been shut down in the country, law enforcement agencies seized military equipment, make arrests.

After a couple of days of anti-government protests, the Cabinet of Kazakhstan has filed a resignation letter, and President Kasym-Jomart Tokayev accepted it.

However, despite the resignation of the government, on January 5, protests in Kazakhstan intensified. In the city of Almaty, during the riots, protesters stormed the administration building (akimat). Chaos reigns in the streets of Almaty. Dozens of cars were burned and shops smashed during the demonstrations in the city.
